Detailed description of Sleepy Hollow Golf Course

Sleepy Hollow Golf Course is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in Brecksville, Ohio. Sleepy Hollow is one of eight courses that are a part of the Cleveland Metroparks system.

Sleepy Hollow golf course first opened for play in 1925. The course was designed by Stanley Thompson.

With its spectacular views of the Cuyahoga River Valley and classic layout, Sleepy Hollow Golf Course ranks as one of the great golf challenges in Cleveland. Think tough when you think of Sleepy Hollow. The course has deep ravines which can come into play on its 13 holes. The 64 sand bunkers and large mature overhanging trees are also a threat. Not as obvious, but still treacherous, are the small greens.

When first opened in 1925 the course was a private country club. The land was leased from Cleveland Metroparks. The course opened to public play in 1963.

The Scottish links influence can be seen throughout the course. Both nine holes go out, turn around and come back. The early holes on both nines play downhill and down the prevailing wind, therefore seeming shorter than the yardage indicates. The incoming holes play uphill and into the wind, and can play surprisingly long. Some golfers have noted the huge greens on holes #2 and #12 among the other 16 small greens. Those were at one time double greens which was not an uncommon practice during the period the course was designed.

It would be hard to find another course where so many holes are praised for their aesthetic beauty as well as playability. #2 is an impressive par 3 and with the tees back, it's a driver tee shot for all but the longest of hitters. #3, a par-4 stretches 495 yards from the back tee position.

The back nine is shorter and more strategic. It features #14, a short par 5 and #17, a short par 4 which are both classic risk/reward holes!

Back in the area for business and decided not to miss playing this great public course, again. For a course built 90 years ago, it still can hold its own in layout and length.

I only had time to play the Front 9 (3,395yd / Par 35) but will make plans to return and enjoy this complete 1925 Stanley Thompson designed layout at 6,893yd / 73.3 / 133 Par 35/36 By having four (4) tee boxes you can play it down to 5,226yd / 66.0 / 115 and enjoy the views. The clubhouse sits on top of the highest point, so enjoy the holes/yardage going down because the return trip is much different. Even though its winter conditions on all playing areas, I was not disappointed with conditions. The many well placed green-side sand bunkers were raked and all the same consistency, with summer conditions only getting better.

#1 hole starts right out on a straightaway, downhill 530yd Par 5 that makes you feel good about flight/distance. If your playing from the Blacks/Tips, this will be your last easy par till #8 180yd Par 3.

Hole #2 235yd Par 3 is one ugly look from the tee box to this 50yd Long green. Having a tree guarding LH side, three (3) large traps on the RH side but the front/short apron looked really good today. (My Choice)

The #5 586yd Par 5 is nothing but a long narrow mowed fairway but rough is very playable, at least today it was.

#6 a 200yd Par 3 is another tough looking tee shot by having a ravine in front of you and all carry to the green. Playing slightly uphill, so go a little extra on that club/swing selection.

Your trip back to the clubhouse from here is uphill with #9 396yd Par 4 swinging for the fences and getting carry only. Today with the soft conditions, I started right off playing one (1) club longer and kept it below the hole all day.

Paid $11.50 for nine (9) holes ($36 18/cart) walking because it was cart path only and this is a traditional walking Links layout. Ended up shooting 40/17putts and look forward to return in drier conditions to enjoy the full 18 hole experience. For a course that started out being a Country Club and changed to Public in the early 1960's, its still being maintained by staff/players to the hidden Jewel of the Cleveland Metro-parks courses.

Overall a great course. Greens roll fast with not many straight lines. If I had to add any negative comments is that the practice greens are not the best as they are severely sloped making practicing not very useful.

they overbook all the time. Ranger was rude and rushed us through play. Staff needs some training on courtesy and respect. THere are a lot of golf courses in this area i can go to without having to put up with your staff.
